Dr Sein Lwin is an experienced Senior Consultant Neuro & Spine Surgeon and is the Neurosurgical Director at the Advanced Brain and Spine Surgical Centre.

Dr Sein Lwin completed his neurosurgical residency and fellowship training at Queen Hospital, London, UK. He completed his undergraduate studies at The University of Medicine, Yangon, Myanmar in 1994, and received a Masters of Medicine (General Surgery) from the same University in 1999. He worked as a consultant general surgeon and neurosurgeon in Myanmar before he joined National University Hospital, Singapore. He also completed the Masters of Medical Science (Surgery) at the National University of Singapore in 2006.

He completed his fellowship training in endoscopic endonasal pituitary and open skull base surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, USA. His research was focused on minimally invasive surgery and endoscopic surgery for skull base tumours and evaluating patient outcomes in functional recovery following these surgeries and more recently on functional outcome improvement in minimally invasive spine surgery for spinal cord tumours.

Dr Sein Lwin set up the first centre of endonasal endoscopic skull base surgery with ENT colleagues at the National University Hospital in 2012 and operated on over 300 complex skull base tumours and pituitary tumour cases from Singapore and other regional countries for more than 10 years.

Prior to his private practice, Dr Sein Lwin spent 20 years in public service. He is a Visiting Consultant in University Orthopaedics and Spine Centre, National University Hospital, Singapore and a Visiting Consultant Neurosurgeon in the National University Hospital and Khoo Teck Phuat Hospital, Singapore. He has worked on complex spine cases in National University Hospital for more than 10 years.

He is highly experienced in spine surgery and in minimally invasive approaches for spinal cord tumours and degenerative spine surgery. His specialised interests lie in endoscopic endonasal and open skull base surgery, pituitary tumours, vascular surgery, cranial nerve disorders and peripheral nerve conditions.

Dr Lwin was also the Director of the Neuro-critical Unit, National University Hospital, Singapore.

Beyond his clinical work, Dr Lwin is also passionate about medical education and is currently a member of the Residency Advisory Committee, Joint Committee on Specialist Training (JCST) Ministry of Health. He also trained and supervised many neurosurgery residents as a Programme Director in the Neurosurgical Residency Training in National University Hospital from 2013 to 2018. He also leads a renowned course on endoscopic endonasal surgery with Pittsburgh University and ENT colleagues at the National University Hospital, Singapore.

Additionally, he is an examiner in the Final MBBS Examination Committee, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS, and was the examiner for the conjoint Surgical Neurological Examination of Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, Hong Kong and Singapore (2015 – 2020). In 2016, he was awarded the Excellent Medical Education Training award.

Dr Sein Lwin authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and is a reviewer in the International Spine Journal and other neurosurgical journals.

Dr Sein Lwin is active in both local and international neurology societies. He currently serves as a member of the Residency Advisory Committee for Neurosurgery Residency Training in Singapore. He also holds key positions in the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Society of British Neurological Surgeons, North American Spine Society, AO spine Society and the Singapore Spine Society. He has also served as a Specialist member of the Workmen Compensation Board in the Ministry of Manpower since 2012.
